Tax Year 2022
It doesn’t seem possible but here we are, the beginning of January and the start of another tax year. With calendar year 2022 now in the rear view mirror we bid farewell to all the Covid related law changes like stimulus payments and expanded child tax credits that we’ve had to navigate and we say hello to all the new law changes we have to plan for like expanded retirement savings rules under the SECURE 2.0 bill, 1099-K forms, and also new beefed up energy credits in the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA…seriously, couldn’t they have named this something else).
So without further ado, here are some quick reminders:
- The federal filing deadline this year for 1040’s is April 18, 2023. As of this post, no states have delayed their filing times and we don’t expect them to.
- That also means that if you owe money to the IRS, or think you’ll owe, you must make a payment on, or before, April 18th, in order to avoid penalties and interest from accruing on your return.
- If you traditionally have an appointment with us during tax season, remember, we want whatever tax documents you have available delivered to us at least two weeks before your appointment.
- Also, if you’re not sure if you have an appointment, or if you need to book one, call us now. We have a few openings left but they fill up quickly.
- Clients that we normally see after April 18th, we emailed you this week with a link to fill out our extension survey and a link to schedule your appointment during the summer. Again, contact us if you didn’t receive it yet so we can get you taken care of. We want to begin filing extensions as soon as the IRS opens up on January 23rd!
- Tax season is always a time when cyber-thieves like to take advantage of people. The real IRS will not call you asking for money or threaten you with jail time. Don’t email sensitive documents (documents containing your name, address, and Social Security number) to anyone, including us – upload them to our client portal. Don’t click on links in emails that randomly ask you to log into bank systems or reset passwords. If something just feels wrong with a situation, please feel free to call and ask us about it.
